Trails & Rails - Trains

The Trails & Rails program operates on a variety of trains with more scheduled to come on line in the future. Below is a list of the various Amtrak trains which have an onboard Trails & Rails program and the areas in which the program operates.

Adirondack

Adirondack
The Adirondack has two Trails & Rails programs. One operates from Croton-Harmon to Albany, New York, and is based out of Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. The other program operates from Saratoga Springs to Westport, New York and is based out of Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site.

California Zephyr

California Zephyr
The California Zephyr has an on-board Trails & Rails program operating from Denver, Colorado to Grand Junction, Colorado and on the return route between these two Colorado cities.

City of New Orleans

The City of New Orleans has an on-board program operating from New Orleans, Louisiana to Greenwood, Mississippi and is based out of New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

Coast Starlight

The Coast Starlight has two Trails & Rails programs on board. Juan Bautista De Anza National Historical Trail hosts a program between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, California, continuing on to Oakland, California during the summer. Klondike Goldrush National Historical Park hosts a program between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon.

Crescent

The Crescent has one Trails & Rails program operating from Atlanta, Georgia to New Orleans, Louisiana and is based out of Martin Luther King National Historical Park.
Empire Builder

The Empire Builder has five onboard programs.

• One program operates from Seattle, Washington to Shelby, Montana and is operated by staff and volunteers of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park.

• A program from Havre, Montana to Minot, North Dakota is based out of Nez Perce National Historical Park and Bear Paw National Battlefield.

• A program from Williston, North Dakota to Shelby, Montana (extending to Malta, Montana on certain dates) is hosted by the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site.

• Another program operates from Minot, North Dakota to Shelby, Montana (extending to Malta, Montana on certain dates) and is based out of Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site.

• The eastern-most Empire Builder program operates from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Columbus, Wisconsin and is hosted by the Mississippi River National Recreation Area.

Heartland Flyer

The Heartland Flyer offers a Trails & Rails program between Norman, Oklahoma and Forth Worth, Texas, based out of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

Maple Leaf
The Maple Leaf Trails & Rails program operates from Albany, New York to Syracuse, New York and is based out of Erie Canal Way National Heritage Area and Ft. Stanwick National Historic Site.

Kansas City Mule

The Missouri River Runner has a Trails & Rails program operating from St. Louis, Missouri to Kansas City, Missouri and is hosted by the Jefferson Expansion National Memorial.

Southwest Chief

The Southwest Chief Trails & Rails program operates between La Junta, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico and is based out of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site.

Sunset Limited

The Sunset Limited Trails & Rails program operates between New Orleans, Louisiana and Beaumont, Texas and is hosted by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

Texas Eagle

The Texas Eagle features two Trails & Rails programs. One operates from San Antonio, Texas to Ft. Worth, Texas and is based out of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. A second program is hosted by the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and runs between Chicago and Springfield, Illinois.
