    Whirligigs in the Big Thicket

Have you ever noticed groups of shiny black beetles swimming in circles on the surface of a pond? They may have been whirligig beetles! Learn more about them at this Science Cafe led by Edward Realzola, a researcher studying whirligig beetles in the Big Thicket area as part of the All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). The ATBI is a project to identify all species living in the Big Thicket region. Mr. Realzola has identified 9 species of whirligig beetles in the Big Thicket, including one that may be new to science.
