Winter Sunset Hike at East Palisades
This hike through the winter forest along Indian Ridge Trail, cutting across to Charlie's Trapping Creek, and then up the Salamander Creek Trail will take us to the grand view of Devil's Race Course Shoals from atop Overlook Ridge. We will return to the start by way of Cabin Creek Trail past Civil War gun emplacements in the beautiful forest along Cabin Creek. You will be able to fully appreciate the rugged topography of the Palisades area with the leaves off the trees. We will travel along rock cliffs, through mature oak-hickory forest, mesic ravine forest, and floodplain forest. Our hike will take us over and past extraordinary rock outcrops and formations influenced by the Brevard Fault. Before our hike ends we will visit the largest naturally occurring rock shelter in the park.
Dress for the weather; wear very comfortable hiking shoes and layer your clothes so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and your activity level. Don't forget your hat, scarf, and gloves. Bring a day pack with a lunch and bottle of water for a picnic in the forest. You may also wish to bring binoculars, hand lens, notebook, and camera in your pack.
