The Tender Heart and Brave: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Sumner
This dramatic reading displays the close personal friendship of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and
Charles Sumner. Despite very different dispositions, the poet and the politician became the closest of
friends for parts of four decades. Tracing this relationship using their own words - through their letters,
journal entries, speeches, and poetry - also traces the ongoing conflicts in the United States over
slavery and the personal struggles these two men had in finding their role.Reception at 5:30.
