Climate Change and Forests
Climate change and forests
Because we are in the center of the continent, we can expect a higher magnitude of warming than many other regions, and because we are close to the prairie-forest border, in an environment that is not optimal for forest to begin with, we can expect the impacts on forests to be large. In addition, the effects of a warmer climate on forests will be reinforced by more storms, droughts, fires, insects pests and diseases, high deer populations, and invasive species. Savannification of large areas of forest on shallow or sandy soils and replacement of the boreal forest by temperate forest and savanna is likely to occur by the end of the century.
Lee E. Frelich is Director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology. He received a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. Frelich has advised 24 graduate students and teaches courses in Forest Fire Ecology and Landscape Ecology on St.Paul Campus. Frelich has authored more than 100 publications with 88 coauthors from 12 countries and has been listed among the top 1% of all scientists in the world in the Science Citation Index, Ecology and Environment Category. He has appeared in the news media 350 times includingThe New York Times,Newsweek,National Geographic, and many TV and radio stations. Current research interests include fire and wind in boreal forests, long-term dynamics of old-growth hemlock and maple forests, invasive earthworms in forests, moose-vegetation relationships, patterns of tree height and global warming.
