The early settlers did not have much, but they knew how to make the most of what they did have. Experience how they celebrated Christmas by making your own decorations for the holidays just as the pioneers did in the 19th century. There will be five different decorations to choose from or make one of each. Rangers will be in period dress as they teach visitors how to make the ornaments and talk about life in the early days. Live music and refreshments will also be provided.
Other sites in the area will be hosting old fashioned Christmas events: Farm and Ranch Museum will have "High Plains Christmas" featuring hayrides, soup lunch, marshmallow toasting, a chance to send letters to Santa via Pony Express and live music by the WNCC Vocal Music Program; North Platte Valley Museum will have their annual "Trees Along the Trail", vote for your favorite decorated tree and enjoy refreshments. Chimney Rock National Historic Site will give visitors a chance to make their own holiday cards and gift bags during "Christmas on the Prairie", refreshments will be served.
Entrance fees are waived at all locations for these events.
