A registration deadline of May 4 has been set for Fire Island National Seashore’s science conference this year. On May 11 and 12, the park will host its seventh biennial science conference at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Berkner Hall in Upton, New York. This conference provides an opportunity for members of the scientific and natural and cultural resources community as well as the general public to learn about recent or ongoing planning, science, inventory and monitoring programs, and research conducted within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore. Experts from academia, government, and conservation organizations will share the status of their work.

This year's presentations include updates of three separate water quality projects and five coastal processes studies. Dredge materials management and post-storm planning are on the agenda this year. The status of the park’s new general management plan will also be provided.

"This is good opportunity to get a comprehensive summary of the research taking place at Fire Island National Seashore," said Superintendent Chris Soller, "and interface directly with a number of researchers."

Conference attendees gain a greater understanding of how the National Park Service uses research to help guide decisions and work in collaboration with other agencies and organizations. Sessions last all day—9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—with a break for lunch (on your own; cafeteria is located on site) and an opportunity to view poster sessions and talk with the experts.

There is a $25 fee for the two-day conference ($15 for one day only), and registration is required. You can register by phone through the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society at 631-321-7028. To get further information, including a conference schedule, call 631-687-5030 or see www.nps.gov/fiis/scienceconference.htm.
