In advance of the approach of Hurricane Irene, Fire Island National Seashore has canceled its programs and will close park facilities by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26. All boats are expected to leave the marinas at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven by the end of the day. Backcountry camping and the Watch Hill Campground were closed earlier on Thursday, August 25. Ferry service to Watch Hill and Sailors Haven will also be suspended early. Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management issued a mandatory evacuation notice for all of Fire Island at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26. Park facilities are expected to be closed at least through Monday, August 29, and will reopen as conditions permit. |
