The National Park Service (NPS) announced last week the notice of availability of a prospectus for solicitation of proposals for an 8-year concession contract to provide ferry service between the NPS terminal in Patchogue, New York and Watch Hill on Fire Island. Additional services are authorized in the proposal for charter transportation services to Watch Hill and other destinations within Fire Island National Seashore, and on-board sale of convenience items and snacks. The area assigned to the concessioner includes designated portions of the terminal building in Patchogue and nonexclusive use of some dock space, waiting areas and restrooms. All personnel, equipment and supplies needed to operate shall be provided by the concessioner.  A pre-proposal site visit is scheduled for Wednesday, February 9, 2011; reservations must be made in advance through the park superintendent's office at 631-687-4751.  The prospectus was issued on January 13, 2011; all offers must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on March 14, 2011.

The new contract is expected to be effective May 2011 and will end on October 31, 2019. Transportation services for Fire Island National Seashore operate seasonally from mid-May to mid-October.

"Through the use of concession contracts, the National Park Service is able to provide essential services to park visitors," stated Superintendent Chris Soller. "The service provided through this contract helps ensure that the visitor's first impression of Fire Island National Seashore is a positive and professional one."
