The New York Campaign of 1776

Park Ranger Michael Callahan, Captain, US Army, retired, leads this walking lecture of the Battle for New York in 1776. Generals and their staffs, the make-up of opposing forces, and the tactics deployed are all discussed in this 90-minute tour.

This program is geared for older audiences (high school seniors, college classes, military staff, and special interest groups) and does involve a considerable amount of walking.

Please wear weather-appropriate apparel and wear comfortable shoes.

NOTE: This program is being developed as part of the US Army Staff Ride Program.

Colonial New York

New York City in the 18th century was not much unlike it is today. A multicultural center of trade and communications, the city was plagued with pollution, crime, traffic, and over-crowding. Like today, there were slums, mansions, taverns, docks, warehouses, and businesses. Look for traces of the colonial era on a Ranger-led tour of lower Manhattan.

Did You Know?
At Andrew Carnegie’s urging, Forbes Field, the world’s first all-steel and concrete baseball stadium was built in 1909. Look for its home plate, embedded in the first floor of the University of Pittsburgh’s Posvar Hall- located within Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area.
