19th Century History on Wall Street
Although Federal Hall is celebrated for it's colonial history, its role as a Customs House and Sub-Treasury contributed much to the growth of America. These programs illustrate Federal Hall in the 1800's.
Defend the Sub-Treasury!: During the New York City Draft Riots of 1863, citizens were terrorized by mobs which ruled the streets committing arson, robbery, assault and murder. To restore order, police, army, militia, sailors and marines fought bloody battles block by block. Wall Street and Federal Hall was protected by a gun boat and a detachment of Marines, under orders to fire on any person threatening the US Sub Treasury building. Hear these stories and others concerning our nations worst case of civil unrest.

Did You Know?
Eight members of the Kennedy family lived at 83 Beals Street from 1914-1920. Since then, more than 500,000 visitors have toured this modest home after Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy donated the house to the National Park Service in 1969, as a “gift…to the American people”. There’s still only one bathroom!
