To help monitor and assess visitor reactions
to this program the NPS has conducted outside research. Research
began during the summer of 1997 with University of Minnesota Cooperative
Park Studies Unit interviewing visitors at 11 national parks and
continues. The results of the 2001 telephone public opinion research
has been published.
Park visitors generally indicated strong support
for the new fees, provided that all or most of the fees collected
remain in the park or with the NPS to improve visitor services or
protect resources. One NPS survey of visitors, indicated that 85%
were either satisfied with the fees they paid or thought the fees
were too low. Analysis of visitation to the fee demonstration sites
shows no significant affect, either positive or negative, from the
new fees.
