Lower Geyser Basin

FIREHOLE LAKE AREA

Hydrothermal features dot the area around Firehole Lake. This part of the Lower Geyser Basin is where Dr. Thomas Brock, a researcher from Indiana University, first discovered thermophiles in Yellowstone in 1966. These heat-loving microorganisms thrive in Yellowstone’s most extreme thermal environments.
