  • A maze of fissures, channels, cracks, and spaces snake through the ground beneath the geyser basins of Yellowstone and serve as the plumbing systems of the hydrothermal features. The shape and strength of the plumbing determine whether the hot water will emerge as a hot spring or as a geyser.
