Church, self-government, education, home and business — for the most part, they represent the achievement of individual self-determination denied most blacks in the post Civli War South.

Nicodemus Town Hall, built in 1939

District No.1 School, built in 1918, still stands in Nicodemus.

African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1885 is a small structure with double-door vestibule entry.

Text: Black churches thrived during the post  Civil War South despite the impoverished lives of their people. This desire for a strong spiritual life continued out West. The congregations that built these churches were formed in the earliest times of Nicodemus.
First Baptist Church, built in 1907, is a large white structure, with multiple wings.
St. Francis Hotel (Fletcher-Switzer Home), built in 1881 is a plain white two story building with a screened porch. It looks much like many houses today.
As with so many other aspects of the lives of Southern Blacks, building businesses and homes were dreams largely left unfulfilled until arriving in Nicodemus. First as a hotel and later as a home, this structure represents the accomplishment of both aspirations.

The right of African Americans to education was denied throughout most of the South, even after the Civil War. This schoolhouse is the last in a series of educational structures the people of Nicodemus built for their children. As the center of local government and community life, this structure and the Nicodemus Township Board symbolize the realization of self-government by the people of Nicodemus Nicodemus Township Hall, Built in 1939, is a long, rectangular building with a peaked red roof. It retains a rustic wood look. A series of large windows is visible on the long side of the stucture, and the main entry is through a vestibule with a matching red roof.
