The Lincoln Neighborhood

This photographic essay provides a brief overview of the 1860 Springfield neighborhood in which the Lincolns lived for 17 years.

In 1860, the Lincolns and all their neighbors were included in the census, which, along with other documentary evidence, tells much about this neighborhood: the area was both economically and racially integrated; there were families and individuals, politicians and merchants, owners and renters, all living on the four blocks around Lincoln's home. There were 25 houses along these two blocks of Eighth Street at that time; today there are 12. These original houses provide a link to the past, to the neighborhood of the Lincoln era. Some have been restored, some are presently being restored, and some will be restored in the future.
