The Mariposa County Arts Council’s 2014 Young Master’s Youth Exhibition will focus on the important role art played in preserving Yosemite and other National Parks and protected space.
Young Masters provides the youth of Mariposa the opportunity to share their ideas, narratives, and inspirations with their community through their own pieces of original visual artwork and offers gallery guests the chance to view the world from their perspective. This year we are adding a new component to the exhibition. All pieces must be linked to this year’s theme, Creating Our National Parks. The exhibition asks youth to understand how art played a significant role in Yosemite’s history, specifically as an agent promoting the preservation of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove. Furthermore, it requires youth to create their own piece of work that makes a compelling case for the further protection and preservation of Yosemite and other spaces.
Youth living in Mariposa and in grades K-12 are encouraged to submit one piece of work, which will be juried by a panel of judges by age group (K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12) in the following categories:
- Drawing – black and white, color pencil, charcoal, pen/ink, crayon, marker, block prints, etching, pastel, collage/mixed media on paper.
- Painting – watercolor, oil, acrylic on canvas or board. Work should be sufficiently dry.
- 3-Dimensional – clay, wood, metal, cloth, jewelry, papier mache, sculpted pieces. Must by free standing or have study base/holder. Please no work that is extremely fragile or in excess of 30 pounds or 30 inches.
- Photography – digital photography, film, polaroid, photo collage, black and white, color, cyanotypes, mixed media, multiple image art.
