A GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP - SECOND TERM
The New Deal: Today's Perspective
Historians and economists continue to analyze New Deal policies,
programs, and politics. Many claim that the New Deal programs
did not bring America out of the Great Depression. Instead,
World War II restored the economy. Most would agree, however,
that the New Deal programs brought hope to Americans in a dark
time. Instead of standing in a breadline, they went back to
work. Instead of watching their crops decay, unharvested, as
prices dropped, farmers refinanced and were paid to help the
economy.
"…more than the material gains, will be the spiritual
and moral value of such work."
- FDR, in a speech about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
