THE NEW PRESIDENT CONVEYED CONFIDENCE, OPTIMISM, AND STRENGTH

Entering into the FDR memorial, the words of the president are engraved on the walls, addressing the circumstances of this harsh time. In the first term of the memorial you see the words, "I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people." With these encouraging words, FDR made a promise to the American people that if elected president he will do something to change their dire situation. After FDR was elected president, he spoke the words "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" during his first inaugural address. Speaking to the American people, he assured them that they should not feel afraid anymore. On the memorial wall, directly beneath these words, is an image of the president driving from his first inauguration. He is riding in his car, waving his hat to the crowds, with a smile on his face. His image is one of confidence, optimism, and strength to the hopeful American people.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
