NEW DEAL
"I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the
American people."
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Powerful still today, this quotation challenged the American
people to get back on their feet and become productive members
of society.
Impact
The New Deal created jobs that provided the necessary encouragement,
hope, value and self-esteem to assist the American people to
recapture their economic values. It was the solution to the
problems everyone was facing: widespread unemployment, homelessness,
and farmers losing their land and livestock.
"No country, however rich can afford the waste of its human
resources. Demoralization caused by vast unemployment is our
greatest extravagance. Morally, it is the greatest menace to
our social order." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Goals of the New Deal:
1. Unemployment relief
2. Economic recovery
3. Economic and social reform
"I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, and ill-nourished.
The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance
of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for
those who have too little." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt
The New Deal created jobs, improved self-esteem and gave everyone
an opportunity to become productive members of society. To make
sure the economic values would be carried on from generation
to generation, the New Deal gave youths and young adults the
opportunity to work as well. For example, the National Youth
Administration (NYA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) were
two programs that employed young men and women. In particular,
the CCC developed most of our national parks.
