FDR - ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

Eleanor Roosevelt was wife to FDR, and First Lady of the United States. However, she was an unusual first lady, in that she refused to be a mere hostess for the White House. She immersed herself in the social, as well as political struggles of her time, being a close confidant to the president every step of the way. It is hard to talk about FDR, without talking about Eleanor. It was she who convinced him to go into politics, first as Governor of New York and then as President of the United States. His staunchest supporter and advisor during those years, she found herself in conflict with the traditional role of a wife. She was undoubtedly a first lady who took on an active role in White House affairs. Given the difficult years, during which FDR was president, she took on many tasks expected of cabinet members. Even after FDR’s death in 1945, Eleanor’s crusade was to establish his legacy. Following the creation of the United Nations, she used her position within it to assure FDR’s legacy, but establish her own as well.
