Saturday, February 5 th, 2011 from 11 AM to 2 PM is a Vintage Day Celebration at Everglades National Park. Festivities including vintage displays, historical reenactors and an old fashioned ice cream social held at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center and Royal Palm. This will be a great opportunity for young and old to enjoy both the natural and cultural resources of the park. Celebrate the opening of a three month Vintage Everglades exhibit featuring the people and events that formed and molded the Everglades into one of the most unique National Parks in the United States. The first proponents were the Florida Federation of Women. These genteel women activists provided the vision while the Civilian Conservation Corps supplied the muscle to develop a world class tourist destination. Their legacy lives on through silent film, historic photos and memorabilia. Interact with historic reenactors portraying gladesmen, plume hunters, early park wardens, botanists, artists, gator hunters, women and political activists. Their stories will transcend you back into the days of old. Historic guided tours are also available. Cool down at an old-fashioned ice cream social complements of the Everglades Association. Vintage postcards and memorabilia will be available at park bookstores. Don’t forget to bring your camera! Fees and Directions: Visitors coming from the Miami area and points north should take the Florida Turnpike (Route 821) south until it ends merging with U.S. 1 at Florida City. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Palm Drive (State Road 9336/SW 344th St.) and follow the signs to the park. Visitors driving north from the Florida Keys should turn left on Palm Drive in Florida City and follow the signs to the park. -NPS- Note to Media - Historic Photos available on request |
