Superintendent to join cast of Historic Reenactors Homestead, Florida: Superintendent Dan Kimball announced today that he'll join park staff and volunteers portraying important historical characters from the early 20th century as part of the 2nd annual Vintage Everglades Day celebration on Saturday March 3rd, 2012. The Superintendent will portray a land developer from this period when the State of Florida gave land grants to developers who sought to transform the wetlands and marshes of south Florida into productive land for homes and agriculture. The visitor center and Royal Palm will be host to many other interesting historical figures who'll be in costume and character interacting with the public. Some of the personalities on hand include: Marjory Stoneman Douglass, May Mann Jennings, Henry M Flagler and his wife, Ernest Coe, and Daniel Beard. Guided tours of the old Royal Palm State Park are also available. This historical area was owned and protected by the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs members. These genteel women activists provided the vision while the Civilian Conservation Corps supplied the muscle to develop a world class tourist destination which became the nucleus of Everglades National Park. A Civilian Conservation Corps enrollee will reveal remnants of this old Florida paradise. Cool down at an old-fashioned ice cream social complements of the Everglades Association. Don't forget to bring your camera! Fees and Directions: Visitors coming from the Miami area and points north should take the Florida Turnpike (Route 821) south until it ends merging with U.S. 1 at Florida City. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Palm Drive (State Road 9336/SW 344th St.) and follow the signs to the park.
