Deer Hammock Wildfire

HOMESTEAD, Florida - Everglades National Park's Fire Management Division is managing a lightning ignited wildfire which started Tuesday July 3rd. It has now burned approximately 1500 acres and is 45% contained. The fire is located approximately 20 miles from park's main entrance.

Assisting Everglades National Park in managing the fire, are firefighters form U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Big Cypress National Preserve. Resources involved are three engines, two helicopters, and one Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT). Yesterday, firefighters conducted burnouts to contain the fire south and east of the main park road.

Potential closures along main park road resulting in reduced access to Flamingo may occur.  No park structures or visitor facilities are currently threatened. Firefighters are actively managing fire activity in order to protect Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow habitat that is located adjacent to the fire.

More information on Everglades National Park Fire Management Division can be found on the park website at https://www.nps.gov/ever/parkmgmt/firemanagement.htm
