A Conversation with Everglades Artists

at ArtCenter/South Florida in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Florida: The Artist in Residence in the Everglades (AIRIE) program and ArtCenter/South Florida present “A Conversation with Everglades Artists” on Wednesday, June 18 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m.). The discussion will focus on the transformative experience of creating art while immersed in residence at Everglades National Park for one month. Miami artist and AIRIE president Christy Gast and retired NPS wildlife biologist Skip Snow will moderate the discussion, with five recent AIRIE fellows: Brenna Dixon, Elite Kedan, Gustavo Matamoros, Nathaniel Sandler, and Susan Silas. This lively discussion will take place at the ArtCenter/South Florida, Richard Shack Gallery, located at 800 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. The current AIRIE exhibition "Flight:  Aloft in the Everglades" is on view at the ArtCenter/South Florida, Richard Shack Gallery through July 6. Both the June 18 “Conversation with Everglades Artists” and the "Flight:  Aloft in the Everglades" gallery exhibition are free and open to the public.

AIRIE is a volunteer program that brings artists to the park for a month where they live and work immersed in the ecological and cultural resources of the River of Grass.  This exceptional program is competitive and only 12 artists are selected for this unique opportunity each year. The works completed under this program contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Everglades National Park. It is hoped that these works will characterize the Everglades for present and future generations, giving park visitors and the general public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes, and ears of the contributing artists.

ABOUT AIRIE

For more information about the AIRIE program call 305-242-7752, or visit https://www.nps.gov/ever/supportyourpark/everartistinresidence.htm

The Artists in Residence in the Everglades (AIRIE) program is the only program bringing artists to Everglades National Park, home of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness, the only subtropical wilderness in the country.  Since 2001, AIRIE has brought over 100 artists, composers, writers and dancers to Everglades National Park for month-long residencies. AIRIE Fellows have the unique opportunity to get to know the ecology of the Everglades by being immersed in it, and then share their perspective through creative public programs. The AIRIE application deadline for the twelve spots open for the 2015 calendar year is June 15. The online application can be found at www.airie.org. Support for this program comes from AIRIE, Inc., a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization with the mission of supporting the AIRIE program at Everglades National Park.
