Ellis Island Distance Studio B

"A Distant Shore": This distance learning opportunity for students (grades 4 - 5) enables students and teachers to visit Ellis Island without leaving the classroom. During the virtual visit, students will work with a National Park Service ranger, learning about our nation's immigration history from the very building that served as the nation's first and largest federal immigration station. During its years in operation from 1892 to 1954, over 12 million people were processed at Ellis Island. 

Through the use of video conferencing technology, participants will get to see primary documents and medical instruments like those used for immigrant inspection. Historical video components, which describe the immigrant experience and processing at Ellis Island, highlight the program. Completion of pre and post-visit activities is required.

This 30-minute program will begin on March 21, 2007 and will be offered every Wednesday at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. In order to participate in the program, your school must have video conferencing equipment. Programs are broadcast live via ISDN service. Reservations must be made at least 14 days in advance.
