The tenth annual Eisenhower Academy: A Summer History Institute will be held from July 8 through July 13 at Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Sponsored by Eisenhower National Historic Site, Gettysburg College, Mount St. Mary’s University, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Society, the Academy will focus on the Eisenhower presidency, including the policies, events, crises, and the life-style of 1950’s America.

Lectures and discussion throughout the week will cover new scholarship on the foreign and domestic policy of the Eisenhower administration. Topics include the Cold War, civil rights, 1950s economics and popular culture. Field trips include a visit to the Eisenhower National Historic Site and a walking tour of Eisenhower’s Gettysburg. Participants will have the opportunity to interview Eisenhower friends and family members, and use primary source documents, film, video footage, and the internet as research tools.

Two Pennsylvania professional education credits (60 ACT 48 hours) are available for attending the Academy. Three graduate credits are also offered through Mount Saint Mary’s University for an additional fee. Teachers, graduate students, and those who simply wish to learn more about Eisenhower and 1950s America are invited to attend.

The faculty includes Dr. Michael Birkner, Gettysburg College; Dr. Anna Nelson, American University; Dr. Daun Van Ee, Library of Congress; Bradley Peterson, Deputy Cabinet Secretary, 1954-1961; Dr. David Sicilia and Dr. Keith Olson, University of Maryland; Carol Hegeman, Eisenhower National Historic Site historian; Lee Ann Potter, National Archives education specialist; Dr. George Colburn, film maker and producer of The Eisenhower Era Education Project; Dr. David Schuyler, Franklin and Marshall College; Dr. Bruce Dierenfield, Canisius College; and Edith Mayo, Curator Emeritus, Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Joining the faculty for the first time this year are Dr. Marc Gallicchio, Villanova University; Irwin Gellman, author of Ike and Nixon; and Susan Eisenhower.

Total cost of the weeklong institute, including food, lodging in air-conditioned residence suites, field trips, and special evening events is $650 single occupancy. The day student rate is $360.
