Buffalo Robe Game

Strand: Physical Education
Grade Level: 4 - 6
Duration: varies
Location: classroom; gymnasium, or outdoor area
Objective: Students will learn to cooperate with one another while learning a Native American game.
Materials: blanket or tarp (represents buffalo robe)
Vocabulary:
Procedure:
  1. Have everyone hold hands in a circle. Place the "robe" in the center of the circle.
  2. Everyone must try to pull their neighbor onto the buffalo robe without breaking hands or landing on the robe yourself.
  3. If hands are broken, both persons are out of the game.
  4. Anyone who touches any part of the robe is also out.
  5. The person who is out will leave the circle and the others reform the circle.
  6. The last person left wins.
  7. The tarp or blanket may be folded as the number of people left playing the game decreases.
  8. The game can be used to improve strength, endurance, and honesty. Games are an important part of passing on traditions and skills.

In the summer of 1831 Lieutenant Jefferson Davis — later Secretary of War and President of the Confederate States of America — superintended work at a U.S. Army sawmill now located within the "Heritage Addition" of Effigy Mounds National Monument.
