Please remember that some events will be added, some may be cancelled and details may change.

May - September          Guided Bird Walks                               Departing from the visitor center, one guided bird walk

will be held each month at  8:00 a.m., beginning on May

13th  - International Migratory Bird Day and June 10th,

July 15th, August 12th and September 23rd.

 

June – September        Weekend Cultural Demonstration         Special cultural demonstration programs will be scheduled

                                    Program Series                                    during the day on select Saturday’s throughout the

                                                                                                summer. Topics will relate to archeology and American

                                                                                                Indian culture – including traditional Dance, flintknapping

                                                                                                and spear throwing (atlatl). Call after May 1, 2006 for

                                                                                                specific information on times and topics.

                                   

                                    Saturday, June 24                                2:00 PM - Chloris Lowe, Native American Culture

Saturday, July 15                                 4:00 PM & 7:00 PM - Brian Hammill, Native American Culture

Saturday, August 12                             1:00 PM - Jerry Cochrane, Native American Culture

Saturday, September 23                       Special cultural program during HawkWatch to be announced.

 

 

June 17 to Sept. 4       Ranger Programs                                  Daily hikes, walks and talks that discuss the mounds history

                                                                                                and nature at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

                       

Indian Village /                                     Daily at 10:00 AM except (not on) Saturdays.   

Boardwalk Trail                                    Tour our reconstructed Indian village and garden area;

Walks                                                   enjoy a one mile round trip walk into the wetlands

below the visitor center. 

 

Junior Ranger                          Saturday at 10:00 AM the park will host a special Junior Ranger

Saturdays                                             hike or activity which can then be followed up on one’s own by

completing the Junior Ranger activity guidebook, signing out a

Discovery Pack, or attending one of the other park programs.

 

Ancient Indian                                      Daily at 1:00 PM except (not on) Saturdays.

Tools                                                   Lear about various tools and implements used by ancient American

Indians. Hands on activities will include objects such as stone points,

spear launchers (atlatl) and fire starters.

 

Prairie Walks                                        Saturday at 1:00 PM.  Visit the restored tallgrass prairie along the fire

point trail. This two mile round trip hike will take approximately 2 hours.

 

Atlatl                                                    3:00 PM - Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday. Learn how

                                   Demonstrations                         this ancient spear launcher was utilized by American Indians to

                                                                                                hunt wild game.

 
 


August 25                     Founders Day                                    Fee Free Day! To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the

                                                                                                establishment of the National Park Service, August

                                                                                                25, 1916.  No entrance fees will be charged.

 

Sept. / October            Iowa Archaeology                                 Every month is Archeology Month at Effigy Mounds!

                                    Month                                                  However, special programs are scheduled during the

                                                                                                annual recognition of Iowa's archaeological past.

                                                                  Call after September 5thth for specific dates and events.

 

September 23 & 24       HawkWatch                                          Celebrate the annual fall migration! Live raptor

                                                                                                demonstrations, adult educational programs, children's

                                                                                                activities, and hawk banding (catch and release). Programs

                                    and activities from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

September 30               National Public Lands Day                   Fee Free Day

The National Park Service will join other agencies for a fee free day in

celebration of National Public Lands Day.

 

Volunteers across the country celebrate National Public Lands Day by

assisting with conservation projects on their favorite public lands.

Call monument's visitor center after August 1, 2006 for details.

 

 

 
October 7                    Moonlight Hike                                      Presented annually, these popular activities can include walks

                                                                                                along the Yellow River Bridge Boardwalk Trail and hikes the along

                                                                                                the Fire Point Trail to the top of the bluff. Effigy mound building

                                                                                                culture, the impact of the historic settlement period and moonlit

                                                                                                views of the Mississippi and Yellow River Valleys are featured.

                                                                                                Call after Sept. 22, 2006 for specific information on topics.

 

                                                                                                Moonlight Hike reservations are required and will be taken

                                                                                                beginning on the preceding Monday (October 2nd). Call the

                                                                                                visitor center for reservations at 563- 873-3491.


November                    Native American                                   Every month is Native American History Month at Effigy

                                    History Month                                      Mounds National Monument! Visit the park to learn about

                                                                                                Ancient American Indians and their legacy.

 

December 3                  Holiday Open House                            Visitor Center: Refreshments, Bookstore items 10% off.
