July 2012

The project for Emergency Repairs for Settlement at the Jefferson Memorial Seawall at National Mall and Memorial Parks received an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2012 Project of the Year Award from the National Capital Section. The award was presented at an awards banquet in Arlington, Virginia on April 10.

The $13.5 million project was contracted and managed by the Denver Service Center. The project was cited for the unique and challenging components of the repairs. The project began in December 2009 after a 2006 comprehensive study found that the seawall was settling because its foundation timber piles did not reach bedrock. The repairs demolished and reconstructed the seawall on caissons and pipe piles drilled into the underlying bedrock.

During the project, the historic fabric of the memorial’s seawall was maintained by carefully cataloging, removing, storing, and replacing each ashlar stone so as to precisely recreate the appearance of the original wall using the original historic fabric. This intricate project was completed in August 2011.
