Liberty Square
Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center and Ferryboat Facility
Fort Sumter National Monument, Charleston, SC

The development of Liberty Square at the Fort Sumter Visitor Center and Ferryboat Facility in Charleston, SC, provides educational and interpretive information. Liberty Square links the NPS facility with the South Carolina Aquarium and is an important element in the City of Charleston's plan to redevelop the Cooper riverfront.
The National Park Service worked closely with the City of Charleston in the design of Liberty Square, which the city will maintain.
The garden rooms are reminiscent of Charleston's treasured gardens in its historic district. The design of the Square and facilities reflect a knowledge of and respect for site specific forces of nature without sacrificing human scale, historic compatibility or aesthetic quality.
For many years, the NPS had sought a site in Charleston to provide tour boat access to Fort Sumter as well as educational and visitor facilities. Liberty Square achieves this goal as well as providing a public park and pedestrian access area.
