Dry Tortugas National Park Mooring Balls in Place for Visitor Use
Dry Tortugas National Park Mooring Balls in Place for Visitor Use. All visitors wanting to take vessels into the Research Natural Area (RNA) must have a permit and use one of the six mooring balls located in this area. Vessels are limited to 2 hours at a time on a mooring buoy. Vessels are no longer allowed to anchor within the area marked as the Research Natural Area.

USS Maine

The USS Maine would make a brief stop at Fort Jefferson before its ill-fated voyage to Havana.  Following the sinking of the Maine, the Dry Tortugas served as an important staging area for U.S. battleships during the Spanish-American War.
