If the parking lot is full at Dunnfield...
Dunnfield is a popular trailhead that is often full by late morning ion summer weekends. If the lot is full, you can try these options:
• Return to the entrance ramp, turn right (a left turn is prohibited!) and enter Interstate 80 westbound. Stay in the right lane and immediately turn to the right off the highway and into a grassy field alongside the highway that is used as an "overflow parking lot." Park here, walk to the back of the grassy area, and follow the gated dirt road back to Dunnfield Parking Area and the trailheads. Do not walk alongside the highway.
• Return to the entrance ramp, turn right (a left turn is prohibited!) and enter Interstate 80 westbound. Stay in the right lane, and continue 1 mile to NJ Exit 1 "Millbrook/Flatbrookville." Turn hard left at the end of the exit ramp, and continue 1/2 mile along the service road to Kittatinny Point.
Park here. Walk ahead on the service road 1/2 mile; be very careful of traffic.
Turn left at the underpass. Turn left again on a ramp that enters Interstate 80 westbound, but turn right from the ramp before it re-enters Interstate 80 into Dunnfield Parking Area, part of Worthington State Forest.
• If you were planning to hike to Sunfish Pond, consider taking Douglas Trail or Garvey Springs Trail, spur trails that lead up from Old Mine Road to the Appalachian Trail near Sunfish Pond.
