High Visibility Enforcement (HVE)

Protecting Resources; Protecting You.

On the average, a car crashes in this park every other day, and someone gets badly hurt every week. Since a third of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol-impaired driving, the prevention of impaired driving on federal roads can save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce traffic accidents in our national parks.

This park is one of three units of the National Park System selected to model High Visibility Enforcement by using techniques such as checkpoints and saturation patrols. Motorists should be aware that federal law permits the use of sobriety checkpoints and primary belt enforcement, regardless of state law.

Federal authorities, local magistrates, and enforcement agencies have been alerted to this program in the park and are on board. The media have received and published news releases on this activity. Safe driving will be enforced; impaired driving will be prosecuted.

The result will be safer roads in our national parks.
