BUS/COMMUTER BUS
Martz-Trailways and Greyhound bus lines from Port Authority Terminal in New York City run to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre PA via the "Stroudsburg/DWG" terminal in the town of Delaware Water Gap PA. There are trips mid-day and on weekends and holidays. Both lines accept on-line purchase of tickets. The bus terminal is 1.5 miles from the AT southbound at Mt. Minsi trailhead and 3 miles from the AT northbound at Dunnfield trailhead (Mt. Tammany, Sunfish Pond)
Walking directions from the terminal to the Appalachian Trail

There is service via Greyhound from Philadelphia PA to the same bus station in Delaware Water Gap PA. Service times are less frequent.

ShortLine Bus provides service from the New York City area to Port Jervis NY and Milford PA and Matamoras PA. There is no public transportation or private excursion out of Milford PA into the park, however.

 

Overnight
There are backpacking sites on the Appalachian Trail but these are governed by various regulations: please download and review the park bulletin on AT at the right (pdf file).
A long day hike or a canoe trip might require an overnight stay. A motel and a resort hotel are within walking distance of the bus station; for details please link to tourist agencies, or search the web for "Hotels Delaware Water Gap PA"

 

COMMUTER TRAIN
New Jersey Transit provides passenger train service from the New York City area to Port Jervis NY, with other train lines connecting to New Jersey Transit departure points in New Jersey.

Several major airports serve this area:
Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE)
Allentown/Bethlehem PA, 65 miles southwest
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport  (AVP)
Avoca PA, 65 miles west of the park
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
Newark NJ, 70 miles east

Did You Know?
... that in the 1750s, the northwest border of New Jersey (now Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area) was a frontier of the English colonies. In the French & Indian (Seven Years) War, a string of forts protected these settlements. The sites of seven of these outposts are in the park.
