Getting Around within the Park

EXCURSION TROLLEY
There is no public transportation through the park.

The Water Gap Trolley out of the historic resort village of
Delaware Water Gap PA travels through the Water Gap on Route 611 in Pennsylvania, and north along River Road to the scenic village of Shawnee-on-Delaware PA. This is a narrated tour with some photo stops.
It is not recommended to walk this same route, as there are narrow lanes, fast traffic, and no sidewalks. Those on foot can see the Gap and Mt. Tammany by hiking to the first overlook along the Appalachian Trail southbound on Mt. Minsi. Please link to the park bulletin on Hiking at the right. (pdf file)

WALKING FROM THE BUS
The Martz-Trailways and Greyhound bus terminal is 1.5 miles from the Appalachian Trail southbound at Mt. Minsi trailhead and 3 miles from the AT northbound at Dunnfield trailhead (Mt. Tammany and Sunfish Pond trails.) For both trailheads, turn right leaving the terminal and bear right toward Route 611 south. Watch traffic as the first part of this route has no sidewalk. Continue straight at the light several blocks along Main Street to the AT signpost in front of the Deer Head Inn.
• For the Mt. Minsi trailhead and AT southbound, turn right and uphill off Main Street onto Mountain Road and take the first dirt road on the left to the parking area.
• For the Dunnfield trailhead and Mt. Tammany and Sunfish Pond trails and the AT northbound, turn left (and downhill) off Main Street and follow the sidestreet to the pedestrian walkway of the Interstate 80 bridge over the Delaware River into New Jersey. Follow the AT signs down off the walkway in New Jersey and parallel to the highway to the next underpass. (You will pass Kittatinny Point Visitor Center NJ) Turn left under the highway, and left again onto what appears to be an entrance ramp. Stay on the grass and watch for traffic. Turn right into the Dunnfield parking area.

CANOEING THE GAP
There is one canoe livery, Pack Shack, within easy walking distance of the bus terminal in Delaware Water Gap PA. Please download and read the park's River Guide (pdf file, at right) to be sure that you have brought along all essentials. There is a gas station food mart next door to Pack Shack.
• Turn right leaving the terminal and bear right toward Route 611 south. Turn left at the light and continue several blocks along Broad Street to Pack Shack on the left.

TAXI AND RENTAL CAR
Limited auto rental (Enterprise) and taxi service may be available in Stroudsburg PA, Milford PA, Matamoras PA, and Port Jervis NY. Taxis often meet the incoming buses at the station in Delaware Water Gap PA (also called the Stroudsburg station)

Did You Know?
... that in the 1750s, the northwest border of New Jersey (now Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area) was a frontier of the English colonies. In the French & Indian (Seven Years) War, a string of forts protected these settlements. The sites of seven of these outposts are in the park.
