Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Superintendent John J. Donahue announced today that culvert repair work on US Route 209 near Sand Hill Creek in Middle Smithfield Township will begin in early May. The work will be done under contract by Consolidated Construction & Engineering Company from Germantown, Maryland.

The project includes:

  • Rehabilitation of the steel arch culvert on Route 209 over Sand Hill Creek at Milepost 0.8
  • Painting and patching of corrugated steel arch culvert plates
  • Placing riprap, removing and re-setting boulders, and other miscellaneous work.

For the safety of visitors and workers, temporary area closures will be in effect while the work is completed. Motorists should expect minor delays and single-lane road closures due to heavy equipment maneuvering in the area. Depending on favorable weather conditions, the project is expected to be done in late June or early July.

This project is administered by Federal Highway Administration (FHA) in cooperation with the National Park Service and is being paid for with Federal Lands to Parks (FLP) funds.
