Everyone Invited to Attend Devils Tower Centennial Celebration
Established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt, America’s first national monument will begin the weekend celebration on Friday evening, September 22. Mark Klemetsrud, a Theodore Roosevelt enactor, will give a presentation on Theodore Roosevelt’s boyhood at 6:00 p.m. in the amphitheatre.
On Saturday, September 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. exhibits and presentations on the park’s resources will be available at the picnic area. A free shuttle will be on hand to transport visitors from the picnic area to the Visitor Center during this time. At 4:00 p.m., Mark Klemetsrud will present Theodore Roosevelt, A Conservation President at the amphitheatre. At 6:00 p.m., the Little Sun/High Eagle Drum and Dance Group will perform in the amphitheatre.
Sunday, September 24, marks Devils Tower National Monument’s 100th anniversary! The commemoration ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. across from the picnic area. Special guests include President of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Rodney Bordeaux, U.S. Senator Craig Thomas, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi’s State Director Robin Bailey, U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin, NPS Deputy Director Steve Martin, and Governor Dave Freudenthal. Theodore Roosevelt IV, great- grandson of President Roosevelt, will give the keynote address. Music will be provided by local singer Lorrie Redfield and by the band students of Hulett, Moorcroft and Sundance. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served at the picnic shelter and a video address by Vice President Dick Cheney will be shown. A special stamp cancellation will be available during the reception.
Entrance fees will not be charged on Friday beginning at 4p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday for the centennial celebration. For more information visit www.nps.gov/deto or call 307-467-5283.
