Devils Tower National Monument’s 2007 Cultural Program Series comes to a close Labor Day weekend with the annual Cowboy Poet Festival.  On Sunday, September 2, between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. stop in at the park's picnic shelter with a picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon of fun.  This year’s roster of cowboy poets and musicians features Robert Dennis, Jim Hamilton, Hank Harris, and Slim McNaught.

Robert Dennis performs old and new cowboy songs along with cowboy poetry.  He has lived all his life on the family ranch in western South Dakota.  Jim Hamilton is a lifetime rancher on the east slope of the Wolf Mountains in southeast Montana.  He has been writing and performing cowboy poetry for the last twenty years.  Hank Harris has lived all over the country before settling down in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Hank revives classic American songs like Dixie, John Henry and Yankee Doodle.  Slim McNaught says he grew up on a horse lookin’ at a cow on a ranch in the badlands of South Dakota.  He has been writing poetry since high school and has published four books and one CD.

Visitors and members of the local community are invited to spend their Labor Day weekend at our nation’s first national monument.  On Monday, September 3rd, the visitor center hours will change to 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  For additional information, contact monument staff at 307-467-5283 ext. 635.

Devils Tower's summit

Did You Know?
The top of Devils Tower is about the size of a football field. It's slightly dome shaped and rocky, with native grasses, cacti, and sagebrush. Occasionally chipmunks, mice, pack rats, and snakes are found.
