Devils Tower, WYMusic! Food! Games! Friends! Relatives! Residents throughout the area will celebrate history at the Old Settlers' Picnic Sunday, June 29. The festivities will begin at 12:30 pm in the picnic area at Devils Tower National Monument. There will be free entrance into the monument for those attending the event.

This year's honorees are Freida Dent, Rosalee Brimmer, and Jim and Sally Neiman. Enjoy the poetry and music of Shirley Anderson and Alvin McAmis. Bring a picnic lunch, beverage and lawn chairs, and enjoy a good, old-fashioned visit with friends and family. There will also be free cake and ice cream, games for the children, and a quilt show.

Pioneer gatherings at the Tower started in the 1890s usually on the 4th of July. These gatherings became known as the Old Settler's Picnic. The largest event took place in 1934, with 4,532 participants. The purpose of the Old Settler's Picnic was hidden in its name. The Old Settlers were the men and women who founded the towns and ranches in the area. They drove the first cattle on the trails, fought the bitter cold winters and the summer heat. The Old Settler's Picnic was a chance for the community to say "thank you" to their founders.

During the Devils Tower National Monument centennial year of 2006, the picnic tradition was revived and once again, members of the local communities come together to celebrate the Tower, local heritage, and respected elders.

Event sponsors include Crook County Promotion Board, Powder River Energy Corporation, Neiman Sawmill, inc. Rare Element Resources, Devils Tower KOA Campground, Devils Tower Trading Post, Devils Tower View Restaurant and Campground, the Devils Tower Natural History Association and Devils Tower National Monument.
