Devils Postpile National Monument
Geologic Activity

Devils Postpile National Monument is home to one of the most impressive and well preserved examples of columnar basalt in the United States. But the postpile itself is not where the geologic story of the monument begins or ends. The story includes violent uplifts, rivers of lava and ice, and the slow workings of wind and water over time. To learn more about this dramatic story, visit our geology page.
Logs and snags provide great habitats for animals.

Did You Know?
After the Rainbow Fire in 1992, many of the trees died. The hollows of these trees and logs are now home to sleeping bears in the winter, pine martens, and many species of birds.
