Join a ranger for an informal, hands-on program about wildlife of Devils Postpile. Meet at the Devils Postpile Ranger Station

June 30 9:00 p.m.: Star Party

Meet Rangers for an astronomy program and telescope viewing. 1 hour. Meet at the Minaret Vista


July 1-September 5 Friday and Saturday Nights: Evening Campfire Programs

July 1-August 21 at 2:00 p.m. Thursday-Sunday: The Postpile, People, and Progress—The History of a Monument

Meet a Ranger at the base of Devils Postpile for a 20 minute talk about the history of the Postpile and the people who preserved it. Meet at the base of the Devils Postpile Formation.

July 28 at 9:00 p.m.: Star Party  

Meet Rangers for an astronomy program and telescope viewing. 1 hour. Meet at the Minaret Vista.

August 13 at 8:30 p.m.: Wonders of the Night Sky           

Meet at Devils Postpile for a program about the night sky followed by a full moon and meteor shower viewing at the Minaret Vista at 9:30 p.m. Meet at the Devils Postpile Amphitheater then Minaret Vista.

Drop by the Mammoth Lakes Farmers Market (on Main Street) any time between 4-6:00 p.m. for a community birthday celebration.

5-7:30p.m. Preserving a Valley: Stopping the Trans-Sierra Highway

Meet at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center to celebrate one of the largest community-based conservation victories in the preservation and protection of the Reds Meadow Valley and Devils Postpile. Refreshments will be served.

Friday July 8, 2011: The History of a Valley

9:00 a.m. Celebrating a Century of Conservation

Join us at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center Auditorium for a ceremony commemorating a century of preservation, partnerships, and progress. Refreshments to follow.

10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wilderness, Trails, and Packers

Drop by the Reds Meadow Cabin (in the Reds Meadow Campground a short walk from bus stop 8) to meet some special four-legged guests from the U.S. Forest Service.

11:00 a.m. Devils Postpile Walk

Join a ranger for an easy 1 hour walk to learn about the mysterious and marvelous geologic story of Devils Postpile and the surrounding features in the monument. Meet at the Devils Postpile Ranger Station

12-2:00 p.m. The History of Horse Patrol

Join National Park Service Ranger Billie Patrick at the Rainbow Falls Hitching Post any time between 12-2:00 p.m. for a short talk about the history of horse patrol in the National Park Service and meet one of the NPS patrol horses.

1:30-3:30 p.m. Skins and Skulls

Stop by the Devils Postpile Ranger Station any time between 1:30 and 3:30 to learn about the many different wildlife species that call the valley home.

2:00 p.m. Preservation, Partnerships and Progress: The Creation of a Monument

Meet at the base of Devils Postpile for a 20 minute talk to discover how Devils Postpile National Monument was initially created and continues to be preserved to this day.

2:00 p.m. The Geology of Devils Postpile and the Reds Meadow Valley

Join Geologist Wes Hildreth on a 1.5 hour geologic tour to learn about the astounding geology of Devils Postpile and the Reds Meadow Valley. Meet at the Devils Postpile Ranger Station.

8:00 p.m. John Muir and the Sierra Club

Meet at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center Auditorium for a 1-hour living history presentation by local John Muir expert Lee Stetson.

8:30 p.m. Devils Postpile Evening Campfire Program

Camping in the Valley? Meet at the Devils Postpile Amphitheater for a 45-minute presentation. Topics vary nightly.

Throughout the day: Yosemite Horse Patrol Rangers will be in the Rainbow Falls area.

Saturday July 9, 2011: Celebrating Our Natural and Cultural History

7:00-10:30 a.m. Bird Banding Demonstration

Drop by the Devils Postpile Amphitheater any time from 7:00-10:30 a.m. and join Point Reyes Bird Observatory Project Director Stella Moss and PRBO staff to learn about bird banding and bird monitoring in Devils Postpile.

10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wilderness, Trails, and Packers

Drop by the Reds Meadow Cabin (in the Reds Meadow Campground) any time between 10:30 and 3:30 to learn about the history of the US Forest Service, packing, and wilderness in the valley and meet some special four-legged guests.

11:00 a.m. Devils Postpile Walk

Join a ranger for an easy 1 hour walk to learn about the mysterious and marvelous geologic story of Devils Postpile and the surrounding features in the monument. Meet at the Devils Postpile Ranger Station.

12-2:00 p.m. The History of Horse Patrol

Join National Park Service Ranger Billie Patrick at the Rainbow Falls Hitching Post any time between 12-2:00 p.m. for a short talk about the history of horse patrol in the National Park Service and meet one of the NPS patrol horses.

1:00-4:00 p.m. The Geologic Story of the Reds Meadow Valley

Join Geologist Wes Hildreth on a moderate 3-hour hike to sample the in-depth geologic story of Devils Postpile and the Reds Meadow Valley. Meet at the Devils Postpile Ranger Station and wear hiking shoes or boots.

Stop by the Devils Postpile Ranger Station any time between 1:30 and 3:30 to learn about the many different wildlife species that call the valley home.

2:00 p.m. Preservation, Partnerships and Progress: The Creation of a Monument

Meet at the base of Devils Postpile for a 20 minute talk to discover how Devils Postpile National Monument was initially created and continues to be preserved to this day.

8:30 p.m. Layers of Stories: Nature and History in the Middle Fork Valley

Join National Park Service Historian Christopher E. Johnson to learn about the engaging history of the monument and the valley. Meet at the Devils Postpile Amphitheater.

Throughout the day: Yosemite Horse Patrol Rangers will be in the Rainbow Falls area.

Did You Know?

The "posts" of Devils Postpile are about 60 feet tall.

The Devils Postpile that you see today is only a fraction of the size the original lava flow formation that filled this valley. Natural processes, especially glaciers, have eroded the rest.
