Park Movies
Alaska Geographic (stacked) WEB

Watching movies in park theaters has become an integral part of the experience of visiting many national parks.

To make these films available to distant audiences that may never have an opportunity to see them otherwise, a number have been miniaturized, highly-compressed and posted here in part or whole.

Full resolution versions of these and other titles may be available on VHS tape and DVD from the park's nonprofit partner association, Alaska Geographic. To check, CLICK HERE.

To download more easily, "RIGHT CLICK" a link and select "SAVE TARGET AS" from the list of available pop-up options.

Heartbeats of Denali

HEARTBEATS OF DENALI (2005)
(Time 18:37)

Carved by ice and water over millions of years, the dynamic wilderness is still in flux, continually shaped by natural forces. Denali is alive, pulsing with life and the timeless ebb and flow of the seasons. It is one of America's wildest landscapes, from the might of its highest peaks to the delicacy of life in its lowlands. Denali is a national park where we can learn from nature undisturbed. (This shorter visitor center version evokes the mood of Denali without the running narration, allowing the viewer to experience the park nearly firsthand.)

Across Time and Tundra

ACROSS TIME AND TUNDRA (2002)
(Time 16:45)

  • LINK SUSPENDED

Written and produced by Denali's Cultural Resouces Division, this acclaimed documentary uses historic photographs and moving images to depict the experience of early visitors to Mount McKinley National Park, especially the Savage Tourist Camp, from 1923 to 1939. The film is screened daily at the Wilderness Access Center and as part of Denali Natural History Tours.

WINTER PATROL (1999)
(Time 25:07)

  • LINK SUSPENDED

Most visitors see the park's sled dogs during summer mushing demonstrations. Only a few visitors ever see Denali's dogs when their real work begins -- when park dog teams patrol thousands of miles under the extreme winter weather conditions of Interior Alaska. This video captures the challenges, techniques and tradition of dog mushing in Denali as sled dogs and rangers patrol a spectacular winter landscape on their historic mission to preserve wildlife and wilderness.

WRANGELL-ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE

CROWN OF THE CONTINENT
(Time 28:30)

Soar above mountains that make their own weather and glacier-carved valleys still emerging from the last Ice Age, as you return with producer John Grabowska to a place of his boyhood dreams. With calving glaciers in hidden fjords, wildlife wandering a vast land and countless peaks, Wrangell-St. Elias fulfills the romantic, mythic image of Alaska. This single national park contains the greatest concentration of glaciers outside of polar ice caps, nine of the sixteen highest peaks in the United States, the largest Piedmont glacier in the world, and the highest coastal range in the world.

YUKON-CHARLEY RIVERS NATIONAL PRESERVE

WHERE RIVERS MEET (2005)
(Time 15:52)

A journey on these rivers passes an ancient landscape. Here the shallow clear waters of the Charley meet the mighty silt laden Yukon. Stunning cliffs and rock formations rise above the river basins, home to the Han Athabascan people. Aspiring miners came here in the 1898 Gold Rush, leaving behind ghost towns and dreams. Peregrine falcons nest in the high bluffs overlooking the rivers. Recreationists float the rivers for the solitude and for glimpses of historic sites left after the gold rush era.
