North to Alaska

North to Alaska: New work by Kirsten Furlong
July 2010

I experienced the great pleasure of spending 10 days at the East Fork Cabin in Denali National Park and Preserve in mid-July 2010.  My initial interests in the Denali residency program centered around visiting Alaska, where I had never been, experiencing the remote and rustic location of the East Fork Cabin as a site for investigating new ideas for my work, and to spend time observing the diverse flora and fauna of the area.  The residency did not disappoint in any of these areas- Alaska was more beautiful and expansive then I even imagined, the experience of the cabin was amazing, and the close study of the smallest cryptogams to the awe inspiring views of

For 10 glorious days in August, a companion and I lived in a small wilderness cabin inside the Denali National Park and Preserve as an Artist in Residence. For the first 4 days my friend Christy Happ stayed with me, and then the

The National Parks are an ideal place for contemplation and observation. There one can see nature close to the way it was before humans changed it so dramatically.  In the National Parks the animals and plants live, perhaps not undisturbed, but within an eco-system, which allows their own struggle for existence and survival to play out, connected to place, weather and seasons.  Humans have a connection to that world too, if only they can remember

The East Fork River sounds like a stadium of applause- constantly cheering for all who has experienced, accepted and perished in Denali.  She roars with laughter, sadness and joy. Sometimes, she is so loud that it interrupts your own thoughts. Other times, she is a

It was my good fortune this summer to be invited to be "writer-in-the-park" in Denali National Park for ten days in August. This is the second year the park has included a writer as part of the AIR (Artist in Residence) program that otherwise includes three or four visual artists each summer. Each artist (with a companion, if desired) is allowed to stay in the

East Fork Winter, Kesler Woodward, 2010

Ever since I spent several weeks in the East Fork Cabin in Denali National Park in the summer of 2002, serving as the Park's first Artist-in-Residence, I've wanted to spend some time there in winter. The Park administration has been very supportive of the idea from the start, and for three years I tried to organize a trip out in March, only to be thwarted each time by either trail
