Savage River: Mile 15

This is the farthest point visitors can travel in their own vehicle on the park road. At this point there is a small parking area, picnic tables, and the trailhead for the Savage River Trail (approximately two miles roundtrip). Visitors can make use of the Savage River Shuttle that runs regularly between the entrance area and the Savage River. The Savage River Campground is located at Mile 13 and visitors with tickets can be picked up at the bus stop for the shuttle into the park.

Sanctuary River: Mile 23

Sanctuary River has both an established campground and a ranger station. There are seven sites for tent camping and access is by bus. Campers with tickets may use the Park Shuttle system, and great hiking is available in the vicinity of Sanctuary campground.

Teklanika Campground: Mile 29

Teklanika campground has sites for RV’s and hard sided vehicles. Tent camping is not allowed at this time due to wolf activity. Visitors driving RV’s into the park must obtain camping reservations and a road permit to drive beyond the Savage Check Station.

Teklanika River: Mile 30

The Teklanika River runs through Igloo Forest, creating large gravel bars for easy travel. A rest stop at Teklanika provides restrooms, and expansive views from the deck. Campgrounds are nearby at Teklanika and Igloo Creek campgrounds.

Igloo Creek: Mile 34

Igloo Creek campground has sites for tent camping only. At this time Igloo Creek is closed to protect wildlife in the area.

Polychrome Pass & Rest Area: Mile 46

Polychrome Pass & Rest Area offers a spectacular view of the colorful Alaska Range. The Polychrome Glaciers are nestled in the hills to the south, while bears and caribou often wander on the river bars below. For a day hike, walk along the ridge behind the rest area and enjoy alpine scenery.

Toklat River & Rest Area: Mile 53

Toklat River is an area of braided glacial rivers and towering cliffs where Dall sheep are often seen. Grizzlies sometimes graze on the riverbed’s soapberries. Buses run as far as Toklat from May 25 through Mid-September weather permitting.

Fish Creek Turnaround: Mile 63

Fish Creek is located on the rolling tundra slopes of the Thorofare Valley. On a clear day, spectacular views of Mt. McKinley can be seen, as well as ample opportunities for viewing wildlife on the way to this turnaround point.

Wonder Lake: Mile 85

Along the road to Wonder Lake, alder and willow-carpeted hills are dotted with kettle ponds. Look for beaver along the way, and be sure to keep an eye out for blueberries in late summer and fall. Buses run to Wonder Lake June 8 through Mid-September weather permitting.

Kantishna: Mile 90

Buses travel to Kantishna between June 8 and September 11. Kantishna is primarily a destination for lodge visitors and backpackers headed for the backcountry. The historic Quigley Cabin is located in Kantishna. Please respect the private lands you may encounter in this area.
