PURPOSES OF THE CIVIL WAR DEFENSES OF WASHINGTON PARK AREAS

Purpose statements provide a foundation for the management of units and sites administered by the NPS. Since there is no specific legislation offering direction for the management of the fort properties, the following statements are based on direction provided in NPS policy and previous planning efforts. The purposes for NPS management of the sites are:

To preserve historical resources related to the Civil War Defenses of Washington
To conserve contiguous woodland communities and scenic landscapes linking the Civil War Defenses of Washington
To provide open space and community-oriented recreational opportunities compatible with the historic and natural values
