FINAL
RURAL LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT

The National Park Service (NPS) has prepared a final environmental impact statement (EIS) to address the long-term management of the rural landscape in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Park managers have understood the park's mandate to include the preservation of the rural landscape—the valley's agricultural lands and associated structures. The park is proposing to implement a fresh approach to rural landscape management to better protect and revitalize this cultural resource. This document describes and analyses the environmental consequences of several alternatives for achieving this goal.

The Draft EIS was released in February, 2003. The National Park Service received 77 comment letters on the Draft EIS, containing 190 substantive comments on the adequacy of the document and the merits of the alternatives presented. The Final EIS (FEIS) includes responses to the substantive comments received on the Draft EIS and a complete reprint of all comment letters (Chapter 5: Consultation and Coordination).

The Final EIS Notice of Availability was published in the Federal Register by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on January 2, 2004. As indicated in that notice, the thirty-day no-action period required by the National Environmental Policy Act regulations will end on January 22, 2004 since the notice was to be published in the December 24, 2003 Federal Register.

The NPS published its own Notice of Availability on December 30, 2003. Following the no-action period, a Record of Decision was published in the Federal Register on May 18, 2004.

The FEIS is now available online in both Adobe Acrobat PDF format and in html format.
Adobe Acrobat is necessary to view these files. An html version of the FEIS is also available.

Reference copies are also available at several local libraries and at Park Headquarters (see full list below). A number of hardcopies or CD-ROM versions are also available upon request by contacting the park Superintendent's office.
