The Guzzler Rifle
At an elevation of 2,440 feet, the Pinnacle Overlook offers a gorgeous view into three states  – Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. A winding, four-mile road leads from the park visitor center to the viewing platform. Pinnacle in Clouds
While at Pinnacle Overlook, visitors should take the short walk to view distant Fern Lake below, and seek out Fort Lyon, a reminder of the military presence in the Gap during the Civil War. At Pinnacle parking area, in the pavilion, are the words of Frederick Jackson Turner, most appropriate to consider while surveying the Gap:

 Stand at the Cumberland Gap
and watch the procession of civilization,
marching single file –
the buffalo following the trail
to the salt springs,
the Indian,
the fur-trader and hunter,
the cattle-raiser,
the pioneer farmer –
and the frontier has passed by.

The Pinnacle Road is closed to vehicles over 20 feet long, and to trailers. If park staff is available, shuttle service can be arranged at a minimal cost.
