The Conservation Study Institute and QLF/Atlantic Center for the Environment, in cooperation with the NPS Park Planning and Special Studies program, convened a workshop on March 18-19, 2003, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to distill lessons learned in NPS partnership areas in the western United States. The 28 workshop participants included staff from NPS and partner agencies and organizations with experience in managing long distance trails, wild and scenic rivers, national heritage areas, and national parks with limited federal ownership. This workshop built on a similar session held in Vermont in 2000, and provided an opportunity for participants to share successes and insights about managing through partnerships and to identify needed steps for supporting and sustaining long-term partnerships. Recommendations of the group were shared with the NPS Partnership Council and a report on the workshop will be available in fall 2003.
