In 2002, the Conservation Study Institute worked cooperatively with
a team of National Park Service educators and educational partners
from academic and nonprofit organizations to develop and conduct
a series of seminars for the National Park Service National Leadership
Council. This seminar series on the "state-of-the-art"
in education was designed to inform discussions on how the National
Park Service might best contribute to education, as called for in
the recent National Park Service Advisory Board Report,
Rethinking
the National Parks for the 21st Century. Topics include place-based
education, multiple intelligence and learning styles, and evaluation.
The National Leadership Council applied the knowledge and understanding
gained from this seminar series on education to create a vision,
guiding principles, and program goals to renew the Service's commitment
to its education mission. In June 2003 a report presenting this
vision and setting a framework and guiding principles for education
in the National Park Service was issued. Renewing
